TRUTH: WHEN WE ARE FAITHFUL AND OBEDIENT, THE LORD WILL HELP US IN TIMES OF TRIAL.

1 Nephi 2:8-15

Laman and Lemuel murmur against their father.

? Why do you think murmuring sometimes results when people do not understand the dealings of God?

Quote: Elder H. Ross Workman, Oct 2001 General Conference:"Beware of Murmuring"

"Murmuring consists of three steps, each leading to the next in a descending path to disobedience." First, people begin to question. They question "first in their own minds," and then they plant questions "in the minds of others." Second, those who murmur begin to "rationalize and excuse themselves from doing what they have been instructed to do. ...Thus, the make an excuse for disobedience." Their excuses lead to the third step: "Slothfulness in following the commandment of the Master....

"I invite you to focus on the commandment from living prophets that bothers you the most. Do you question whether the commandment is applicable to you? Do you find ready excuses why you cannot now comply with the commandment? Are you slothful in keeping it? Beware of the deception of the adversary. Beware of murmuring."

Murmuring consists of three steps:

1. People begin to question.

2. Rationalize and excuse themselves for disobedience.

3. Slothfulness in following the commandments of the Master.

? What can I do if I find myself murmuring about the Lord's prophets and commandments?

REPENT

1 Nephi 2:16-19

vs. 16 - Nephi has great desires to know of the mysteries of God. He cried unto the Lord and the Lord visited him. Nephi's heart was softened so that he beieved all of the words of his father. He did not rebel.

vs. 19 - The Lord speaks to Nephi: "Blessed art thou because of thy faith. Nephi sought diligently with lowliness of heart.

TRUTH:  WHEN WE CALL UPON GOD, HE CAN SOFTEN OUR HEARTS TO BELIEVE HIS WORDS.

? When have the words of a friend or a family member strengthened my faith?

1 Nephi 2:20-24

THOSE WHO KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS WILL PROSPER

Bruce R. McConkie quote: "Obedience is the first law of heaven."

True Principle: GOD BLESSES THOSE WHO ARE OBEDIENT AND FAITHFUL

Commitment: I WILL FOLLOW THE GUIDANCE I RECEIVE FROM THE HOLY GHOST
